Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

Tap the + button on the main screen. You can scan a document directly with your camera, or choose an existing image from your Photos library. Kept will automatically try to detect the expiry date — you can always edit it manually after.
No. There is no account, no email address required, and no sign-up. Open the app, add your documents — that's it. We genuinely do not know who you are.
The free tier supports up to 5 documents. Upgrade to Lifetime Access ($29.99, one-time) for unlimited documents. You can upgrade from inside the app via Settings → Upgrade.
Any document that matters to you — passports, visas, driving licences, health insurance cards, work permits, Emirates ID, residence permits, vehicle registration, and more. Kept is a general document vault; there are no restrictions on document type.

Privacy & Security

Each document is encrypted using AES-GCM with a unique key derived via HKDF. The master key is stored in the iOS Keychain, protected by your device passcode and Face ID. Your documents are never stored in plain text on disk.
No. OrbonTech has no servers that receive your data. Your documents exist only on your device (and in iCloud, if you've enabled sync). We have no technical means to access them — this is by design, not just policy.
Your data lives on your device, encrypted. If you had iCloud sync enabled (paid tier), your encrypted documents are also in your iCloud Private Database — sign in to the same Apple ID on a new device, install Kept, and they'll restore automatically. Without iCloud sync, data on a lost device cannot be recovered.
No. There are zero third-party analytics, crash-reporting, or advertising SDKs in Kept. Nothing phones home. You can verify this in our Privacy Policy.
Kept has no user accounts and no OrbonTech servers. All your data lives on your device (and optionally in your own iCloud account). To delete your data:

Delete individual documents: swipe left on a document → tap Delete.
Delete everything: delete the Kept app from your iPhone. iOS removes all encrypted documents and the encryption key permanently and irrecoverably.
Remove iCloud data: go to iOS Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → Kept → Delete Data from iCloud (only applies if sync was enabled).

If you've contacted us by email and want that correspondence deleted, email [email protected] and we'll respond within 30 days.

Purchases & Billing

Open Kept → tap Settings (gear icon) → Restore Purchase. Make sure you're signed in to the same Apple ID you used to buy. The purchase will be verified with the App Store and unlocked instantly — no charge.
Refunds are handled by Apple, not OrbonTech. Request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com. If you have a problem with the app itself before requesting a refund, please email us — we're happy to help resolve it.
No subscription. $29.99 once, yours forever. No recurring charges, no annual renewal. Future updates to Kept are included.

Using the App

Yes. After adding a document, tap it to open it, then tap Edit to manually set or correct the expiry date. Date detection is automatic but not infallible — always verify critical dates (especially for visas and passports).
Kept automatically locks when you background the app, to protect your documents. Unlock with Face ID or your passcode. This behaviour cannot be disabled — it is a core part of the security model.
Go to your iPhone's Settings → Notifications → Kept and toggle notifications off. You can also manage notification settings per-document inside the app.
iCloud sync is available to Lifetime subscribers. After purchasing, go to Settings → iCloud Sync and toggle it on. The app will prompt you to restart — this rebuilds the data store with iCloud enabled. Your documents will begin syncing to your iCloud Private Database after the restart.

Troubleshooting

Problem

Purchase not restoring

Tapping "Restore Purchase" does nothing or shows an error.

Fix

Ensure you're signed in to the same Apple ID used to buy. Check Settings → [Your Name] → App Store. Also verify you have a working internet connection and try again. If the issue persists, email us.

Problem

Documents not syncing across devices

iCloud sync is enabled but documents don't appear on another device.

Fix

Check that both devices are signed in to the same Apple ID and iCloud Drive is enabled in Settings → [Your Name] → iCloud. Sync can take a few minutes on first run. Force-close and reopen Kept on both devices.

Problem

Wrong expiry date detected

The automatic date detection picked the wrong date.

Fix

Open the document → tap Edit → set the correct date manually. Automatic detection works best on clearly printed, unobscured dates in standard formats.

Problem

Face ID not working

App asks for Face ID but it fails or isn't available.

Fix

Check that Face ID is set up in Settings → Face ID & Passcode. If Face ID fails, Kept will fall back to your device passcode. If you have no passcode set, set one first.
